This week’s question: Should you put military experience on a resume, and if so, how do you format it?
That is a great question!
Military experience should definitely be on your resume! That is wonderful experience that is unique and should be highlighted.
For formatting there are a few options:
- Include as Professional Experience
- List off any position titles you held
- Include bullet points for each of the transferable skills in your description of the position
- If you have an extensive amount of experience use a skills-based resume

- Each position and task can be described in detail under each transferable skill
A few tips on the actual language of your resume:
- Convert military terminology to civilian language
- MP= police officer, law enforcement
- Command Post = Operation Center
- Troops = Coworkers, Teammates
- Subordinate = Employee, Coworker, Supervisee

- Don’t underestimate your gained abilities
- In the military the transferable skills that you gain are often overlooked because it is thought of as only an expectation, in reality, those are HUGE in the civilian world and need to be highlighted
- Such as leadership, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, attention to detail, and responsibility!
